Statement of Need and Purpose
Thromboembolism is an enormous problem across the spectrum of medicine. In the US and Europe over 600,000 people will suffer a venous thromboembolism, and nearly 20% will die as a result. The incidence of arterial and venous thromboembolism (VTE) is highly age dependent, contributing significant morbidity and mortality to an aging population.
Oral vitamin K antagonists (warfarin) are effective prophylactic agents in preventing recurrent thrombosis, but have a narrow therapeutic window. Their use in the elderly has been associated with an increased risk of bleeding complications, but with proper monitoring can be given safely to patients greater than 80 years and result in overall decreased morbidilty and mortality.
